Most of the canal is a SSSI and is notable for its flora and fauna. The alkaline water from the chalk springs at the western end of the canal mix with the acidic water as the canal passes through heathjlands on its eastward journey, giving rise to one of the largest varieties of aquatic plants and invertebrates in the UK.
